Team Chemistry, Attitude and Energy prove successful

The FC Wisconsin U14 NPL team accepted the invitation to the Disney Showcase over the Thanksgiving weekend.  The event had players arriving on Thanksgiving Day and playing through Sunday, November 27th

The event was held at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports.  The team was in a Showcase bracket of 16 teams.

FC Wisconsin would open the event playing Dallas powerhouse Chelsea Solar Soccer Club.  The morning game saw the game start in the mid 70’s and climb to lower 80’s.  Both teams came out with excitement and energy and took the first 8 minutes to settle into the game.  The game would go back and forth with FC Wisconsin capitalizing twice as Jack Corbett buried two goals and Santi Davila helped secure the 2-1 victory in goal.

The second game of the day was against Ohio Elite Kentucky.  FC Wisconsin started fast and went up 1-0 on goal from Corbett.  FCW would narrowly miss several chances to double their lead throughout the first 55 minutes of the game.  Late in the game Ohio would equalize after a rebound fell to them right in front of the net.  The game would finish in a tie and would mean the third and last game of group play would come down to a win and goal differential to move on to the semi final.

The last game of group play would be played against Space Coast United, from the home state of Florida.  The game would be tied at halftime with the players understanding they needed to score some goals and increase the goal differential in order to move on.  The first goal coming quickly on a pass from Anthony Meenk to Jack Corbett to take the lead. The second half saw three more goals from Corbett again, Miles Igunbor and Nathan Corbett to finish the game 4-1 and the team advancing to the semi finals over Ohio Elite based on goal differential amongst like opponents.

“Each and every player on the roster started in a gme and had an impact on the tournament.  The teams success came by each and every player positively impacting play and results.  It was a true collaboration of all the players on the roster” said coach Josh Provan.

The final day of the event had FCW playing against another local club, this time versus the Regional Powerhouse of Weston FC.  Both teams would connect passes and try to play the game the right way.  FC Wisconsin would take the lead off a corner kick scored by Vincent Bennage.  They would then get another two goals, one from Miles Igunbor and Jack Corbett for his tournament leading 5th goal of the event. FCW would go on to dominate an extremely competitive game getting the result of 3-0 to move on to the finals with Davila and the backline maintaining the shutout.

Five games in three days is not ideal and the players were tired and sore but excited about the opportunity to play on the stadium field of ESPN Wide World of Sports.

The Championship would kick off at 3.00pm vs United Futbol Academy out of Georgia.  Again, FCW would get on the scoreboard first with Porter Provan making an amaizing run with the ball from Center back all the way into the 18 yard box and bury the ball in the right corner to go up 1-0.  United Futbol would equalize off a rebound and scrum in front of the goal.

“The overall experience was tremendous.  The players, parents, coaches and team made this a positive event and trip for all involved.  The boys grew together on and off the field as teammates.  They grew to trust each other, and work for each other toward a common goal.  Much of our on the field improvement came in the decision making and balance on when to connect passes and combine or when the ball just needed to be cleared behind the opponent to reorganize ourselves.  We really grew and matured as the event went on” said Co-DOC Billy Solberg.

The game and overtime would end 1-1 and go to the dreaded shoot out.  FCW would bury home their first four shots from Jack Corbett, Vincent Bennage, Porter Provan and Nathan Corbett , while goalkeeper Santi Davila would save two of the United’s shots to secure the Championship.

Congrats to all the boys on their hard work, attitude, togetherness and unselfish attitudes.
